Slipped Sheet Bend

Slipped Sheet Bend
Preparing the rope…

Make a bight in the first rope

1/8

Fold the heavier rope into an open U and approach with the working rope.

Loops & Ropework · 8 steps

Join a folded rope to another end with a release bight in the final tuck.

Also known as Slipped becket bend.

The slipped sheet bend follows the sheet bend’s route around a receiving bight. The working end comes through that bight, circles both of its legs, and goes beneath its own standing part. For the slipped version, the last tuck is made with a closed fold instead of pulling the whole end through.

Keep the short release tail outside the crossing. The two sides of the fold share the same passage, and withdrawing that fold releases the finish. The model uses two colors to distinguish the receiving rope from the rope making the tuck.

When to use it

  • Make a temporary rope join with an accessible release tail.
  • Learn a slipped finish from a familiar sheet bend.

Keep in mind

An accidental pull on the release tail can undo the join. Use an unslipped bend where release under disturbance would be a problem.

Check your knot

  • The working rope circles both legs of the receiving bight.
  • The folded tuck goes under its own standing part.
  • The short tail remains outside and can withdraw the fold.
How to tie Slipped Sheet Bend
  1. Make a bight in the first rope

Fold the heavier rope into an open U and approach with the working rope.

  2. Enter the bight

Pass the working end through the U from behind.

  3. Go around both legs

Carry the end around the back of both parts of the first rope.

  4. Fold the working end

Make a closed bight instead of tucking the free tail.

  5. Push the fold under its own entry

Feed both sides of the fold beneath the working rope’s entry strand.

  6. Bring the folded end through

Keep the free tail outside while the closed fold advances.

  7. Draw out the release loop

Leave a clear folded loop. Pulling the short tail releases the slipped finish.

  8. Dress the slipped bend

Gather the crossing around the receiving bight. Keep the release loop open and its short tail outside.
