Square Knot
Tie two ends around a bundle with two opposite half knots.

Step-by-step
- Start with opposing ends
The ropes approach from above and below. Each working end will return beside its own standing part.
- Bring the ends together
Bring the working ends toward each other, leaving room for the two half knots.
- Tie the first half knot
Cross one end over the other and wrap it underneath. Both ends move together in this view.
- Turn the ends back
Curve both ends back toward their own standing parts to begin the opposite half knot.
- Tie the opposite half knot
Cross and tuck in the opposite direction. Repeating the first direction would make a granny knot.
- Bring out the tails
Each tail leaves beside its own standing part: one pair above and one pair below.
- Check the square knot
The two bights interlock, with each tail beside its standing part. This open view shows a binding knot for a bundle.
