Clove Hitch

Two turns and a crossing attach a rope to a post or rail.

Can slip or jam. Check temporary attachments as tension changes.

Step-by-step

Start below the rail
The standing part hangs in front of the rail.
Make the first turn
Take the working end up the front, over the rail, and down behind it.
Cross the front
Bring the end up from the lower left, crossing over the standing part toward the upper right.
Make the second turn
Go around the rail in the same direction, beside the first turn.
Tuck under the crossing
Bring the end up the front and underneath the diagonal strand.
Check the hitch
Two turns surround the rail. The diagonal strand lies over both front strands.
