Double Sheet Bend

Double Sheet Bend
Preparing the rope…

Form a bight

1/10

Fold the thicker rope. Bring the thinner rope toward the opening.

Basics · 10 steps

A sheet bend with a second wrap for ropes of unequal thickness.

The double sheet bend adds a second wrap around the bight of a sheet bend. The extra turn is useful when the two ropes differ in thickness or the ordinary bend needs more purchase. Both turns belong to the thinner working rope.

Keep the wraps together as the end returns beneath its own standing part. Do not place the second turn across the first or reverse its direction. The finished arrangement should still be recognizably a sheet bend, with both short ends on the same side.

When to use it

Join a thinner line to a thicker rope.

Keep in mind

Keep both wraps together and both short ends on the same side.

Check your knot

  • The bight belongs to the thicker rope.
  • Two adjacent turns surround both bight legs.
  • Both short ends leave on the same side.
How to tie Double Sheet Bend
  1. Form a bight

Fold the thicker rope. Bring the thinner rope toward the opening.

  2. Enter the opening

Pass the thinner end through the bight from behind.

  3. Pass the right leg

Bring the end forward and up beside the bight's short end.

  4. Wrap both legs

Carry the end behind both legs and around the left side.

  5. Tuck under the entry

Bring the end across the front, then under its own incoming strand.

  6. Wrap a second time

Continue around both bight legs again, inside the first turn.

  7. Tuck again

Pass under the incoming strand again. Keep the two turns side by side.

  8. Extend the tail

Leave both rope tails on the same side of the knot.

  9. Dress and tighten

Pull the standing parts apart and guide the turns together. Keep the tails clear.

  10. Inspect the knot

Check two turns around both bight legs and two tucks under the incoming strand.
