Fold the heavier line

1/7

Make an open fold in the thicker line. The thin line approaches the fold from below.

Fishing · 7 steps

Join unequal fishing lines by winding the thinner line around a fold in the heavier one.

Also known as Albright special.

The Albright places the heavier line in a fold and uses the thinner line to bind that fold. The thin end first enters the opening, lies back alongside it, then winds toward the folded end. The wraps enclose both heavy legs and the returning thin section.

The final exit is the key check: the thin tag comes back through the fold and leaves on the same face as its standing part. An exit on the opposite face changes the arrangement. The lesson uses ten wraps, but the appropriate count depends on the materials and diameters.

When to use it

  • Connect fishing lines with substantially different diameters.
  • Join a leader to a heavier line using a folded core.

Keep in mind

Wraps must grip the chosen materials without crossing. Moisten where appropriate, seat gradually, and follow line-specific guidance before trimming.

Check your knot

  • The heavier line forms the fold.
  • The turns stay side by side toward its closed end.
  • The thin tag and standing line leave the same face of the fold.
How to tie Albright Knot
  1. Fold the heavier line

Make an open fold in the thicker line. The thin line approaches the fold from below.

  2. Pass through the fold

Take the thin end through the opening, from the front to the back.

  3. Lay the end alongside

Bring the end up along both legs of the heavier line.

  4. Wind back down

Wrap around both heavy legs and the thin line’s returning leg. Keep the turns side by side.

  5. Complete ten wraps

Continue toward the folded end until you have ten even wraps.

  6. Exit on the same side

Pass through the fold again. The thin tail and its standing part both leave on the front side.

  7. Gather the wraps

Bring the ten turns together without crossing them. The thin tag and its standing line still leave the fold on the same face.
