Arrange the rope ends
Bring two ropes of similar diameter from opposite directions.

Form the first bight
Turn the first end into an open bight.

Interlock the second bight
Feed the second bight through the first before completing either overhand.

Cross both tails over
Take each working end over its standing part and the other rope.

Thread the first tail across the middle
Pass under the two central strands and out over its own loop.

Thread the other tail
Repeat from the opposite side, keeping the tails separate.

Dress the interlock
Draw the two standing parts apart and work slack out of each half. Keep both central return tails visible.
