Slipped Buntline Hitch

Slipped Buntline Hitch
Preparing the rope…

Leave a working end

1/9

Keep enough rope to form the hitch and a release loop.

Boating · 9 steps

Finish a buntline hitch with a folded end that can be withdrawn for release.

A slipped buntline keeps the buntline’s two-turn structure around the standing part, with the second turn closer to the attachment. The final end-under-crossing passage is replaced with a bight. Both sides of that fold pass through while the free release tail remains outside.

The direction of the turns still matters. Reversing their order makes a different ring attachment even if a release loop is added. Watch the fold enter beneath the diagonal, then draw it through far enough to leave a usable loop.

When to use it

  • Make a temporary ring attachment with a release tail.
  • Compare slipped and unslipped buntline finishes.

Keep in mind

The release end must be protected from accidental pulls. A slipped finish is inappropriate when an unintended release would be hazardous.

Check your knot

  • The second turn sits toward the ring.
  • The closed fold passes beneath the crossing strand.
  • The release tail remains outside the finished body.
How to tie Slipped Buntline Hitch
  1. Leave a working end

Keep enough rope to form the hitch and a release loop.

  2. Thread the attachment

Pass the end through the ring and bring it back alongside the standing part.

  3. Make the lower turn

Go around the standing part below the attachment.

  4. Add the turn toward the ring

Cross upward and wrap again closer to the ring.

  5. Fold the working end

Keep the tail outside and prepare a closed bight for the final tuck.

  6. Pass the fold beneath the diagonal

Feed the closed fold underneath the crossing strand.

  7. Draw the loop through

Carry both sides of the folded end through the same passage.

  8. Leave the release loop

Dress the hitch toward the attachment and leave the short tail accessible.

  9. Dress the slipped hitch

Draw the hitch toward the ring and gather the two turns. Preserve the release loop and leave its tail accessible.
