Make a fixed fishing loop with two passes of a doubled end through one opening.
Also known as Double surgeon’s loop.
The surgeon’s loop begins with doubled line. Instead of taking the folded end through the overhand opening once, pass it through twice. The two passes form the body of the knot while the closed fold remains the usable loop.
Do not confuse this with a surgeon’s join. The loop uses one folded line and leaves one closed eye; the join uses two separate lines. Keep the doubled strands together throughout each pass so the finished knot draws up evenly.
When to use it
- Make an end loop in a fishing leader or tippet.
- Prepare one side of a loop-to-loop connection.

Moisten suitable fishing line and draw all parts evenly before trimming. Line diameter and material affect how the knot seats.
Check your knot
- The folded end goes through the opening twice.
- The paired strands remain alongside each other.
- The eye remains open as the knot is seated.
