Uni Knot

Uni Knot
Preparing the rope…

Approach the eye

1/8

Bring the tag end to the hook eye.

Fishing · 8 steps

Coil the tag end inside a loop, then slide the knot to the hook eye.

Also known as Duncan loop, Grinner knot.

The Uni forms a loop beside the standing line, then winds the tag inside that loop around the paired straight parts. Drawing the tag closes the wraps into a barrel, which can be seated toward the hook eye.

The inside-loop winding is the detail to watch. It differs from simply wrapping the tag around one exposed standing line. The same structure can be tied around a second line; two opposing Unis then make a Double Uni join.

When to use it

Attach fishing line to a hook, lure, or swivel.

Keep in mind

Moisten and seat the coils evenly before trimming the tag end.

Check your knot

  • The tag winds inside the open loop.
  • Each turn encloses the paired straight sections.
  • The barrel seats evenly before the tag is trimmed.
How to tie Uni Knot
  1. Approach the eye

Bring the tag end to the hook eye.

  2. Pass through the eye

Thread the end through the eye and bring it back alongside the standing line.

  3. Double the line

Keep the returning section beside the standing line.

  4. Make a side loop

Turn the tag end down to make an open loop beside the doubled line.

  5. Wrap through the loop

Pass the end around both central strands and through the side loop.

  6. Complete six turns

Continue in the same direction, making six turns through the loop.

  7. Leave a tag

Bring the tag end out beside the top of the loop.

  8. Gather the six turns

Draw out the side-loop slack and bring the six turns together toward the eye. The tag stays threaded through the side loop.
