Arrange opposite ends
Leave one long standing part below and the other above.

Form a b and a q
Make two opposite loops. The first sits in front of the second in this view.

Overlap the openings
Keep the loop openings together, with the tails on opposite faces.

Tuck the first tail
Pass the front tail through both openings to the back.

Tuck the other tail
Pass the back tail through both openings to the front, beside the first tuck.

Dress the interlock
Draw the standing ropes apart and work the two overhands together. The tails must still pass through the center in opposite directions.
