Blood Knot

Blood Knot
Preparing the rope…

Overlap the lines

1/8

Place the lines beside one another, with their long ends pointing in opposite directions.

Fishing · 8 steps

Join similar fishing lines with two opposing coils and tags that leave the center in opposite directions.

Also known as Barrel knot.

A blood knot forms a barrel on each side of the join. Each tag wraps around the other standing line and returns to the gap between the two sets of turns. The tags enter that central gap from opposite sides, rather than following each other through it.

The result is a fairly straight connection, often used when building leaders from sections of similar diameter. Hold the central opening while forming the second half so the first set of coils does not unwind. Work the turns toward the center as you seat the knot.

When to use it

  • Join similar-diameter monofilament sections.
  • Build a tapered leader from successive line sections.

Keep in mind

Large diameter differences make even seating harder. Consider the Albright or another material-appropriate join for strongly unequal lines.

Check your knot

  • Each tag wraps the opposite standing line.
  • The two groups of turns face each other.
  • The tags leave the middle on opposite faces.
How to tie Blood Knot
  1. Overlap the lines

Place the lines beside one another, with their long ends pointing in opposite directions.

  2. Begin the first barrel

Wrap the first tail around the other standing line.

  3. Complete five turns

Make five turns, keeping each beside the previous one.

  4. Return to the middle

Bring the first tail back and pass through the central opening.

  5. Wrap the second tail

Repeat on the other side, around the first standing line.

  6. Complete the other five turns

Use the same number of neat turns on both sides.

  7. Pass the opposite way

Put the second tail through the central opening in the opposite direction to the first.

  8. Gather both barrels

Draw the two sets of turns toward the center. Keep both tags through the middle in opposite directions.
