Figure Eight Loop
Tie a fixed end loop using a folded section of rope.
WHEN TO USE IT
- Make a loop without threading a free end through the whole knot.
KEEP IN MIND
The closed loop must fit over its attachment; use a follow-through for a closed ring.
Step-by-step
- Fold the rope
Work with the closed fold, or bight. Both free ends stay below.
- Form the upper loop
Bend the doubled rope left and bring the bight down.
- Cross behind
Take the bight behind both standing strands and down to the right.
- Go around the strands
Pass below and across the front of the standing strands, bringing the bight up on the left.
- Approach the opening
Take the closed bight behind the left side of the upper loop and into its opening.
- Thread the bight
Pass the folded rope through the opening. The closed tip emerges forward and upward over the upper turn.
- Extend the loop
Draw the bight upward and open the finished loop.
- Check the figure eight
One rope forms a doubled figure eight, a closed upper loop, and two free strands below.
